Pascal: Hrs. 7-9 re-evaluation

So there comes a point, as a sculptor, when you have to be honest with yourself and really stop what your doing to make sure your not going down the wrong road. I knew the proportions were off. It felt like the entire thing needed to be about 10% smaller. After 6 hours of sculpting, the last thing I wanted to do was strip it down, adjust the armature and start again from scratch. But if that's what had to be done to get it right... then I was going to do it.

I printed out a photo at the same angle as my reference and traced the differences. To my relief, I actually needed to make the head larger and make a few other easy changes!

Tonight I end on hour 9. I feel much better about where this is going. I wish I was farther along, but I know I'm on the right road.

Pascal: slowly but surely... hours 5 and 6.

Tonight was a good night of adjusting proportions. I've shortened, twisted and thickened the legs. The snout on the head has been reduced and pushed up alot more. The crest/horn thing on the head is also shorter and bulked up a bit more. The spine has been dropped down a bit. The ribs have been added to on the squeezed side. It's starting to look good. But this is where really obvious major progress will not be as evident. Now we'll start to really touch up small stuff (once the legs are taken care of). The danger for any artist is in this next arena. You can spend a lifetime touching up little stuff if you stop paying attention.

Pascal: 2 more hours...

So, tonight I'm just applying the base clay. I use my free older white clay underneath and my fresher better terra cotta colored clay on top where all the detail will be. There are proportion problems at this point, but things like that will be fixed when refining the basic shape tomorrow. The tail will actually be done towards the end. It's MUCH easier to attach a coiled up snake of clay at the end (literally) than it is to just base the clay out and sculpt the spiral in.... you'll see what I mean later on.

Pascal

Started a new sculpt tonight. Pascal from Tangled. We had a really nice sculpt in the shop a month or so back and I happened to take some good photos of him. Now I will have one!!!!

Tonight I worked on him for 2 and a half hours. As you can see, the armature is very well along. Tomorrow, I'll start throwing clay on him.

EPCOT model: Helicopter terminal tower

Sorry, I don't have the process photos for this one. This was another one night scratch build, but it really took all night long! I was too tired by the end to take photos. Basically, what happened was, I drove to Hobby Lobby, bought thin plastic sheets, cut out the shapes, sanded them to a frosted finish, glued them all together and added the black lines with sharpie. It wasn't a difficult build. In fact, I was only tired at the end because I underestimated the project and started far later than I should have. It ended up looking great though!!! This was the final thing I created from scratch for the EPCOT model. The other people I worked with wanted to hide things in the model, which is all well and good, but I was satisfied knowing that my stuff, the stuff I took ownership in, was out in plain sight.

EPCOT model: Scratchbuilt Goal posts

Not quite as impressive as the carnival stand, I also made two goal posts for the football stadium. It was very easy, I just cut five pieces of styrene cylinder rods, and glued them all together....
